“A união faz a força”.
Versão em inglês:
Lord Of The Flies: Without a leader, the group would be stronger “Unity makes strength”. That is the national motto of various countries (including Belgium).
This unity can only be achieved if there is respect, in which there isn’t a person that stands above everyone else, who almost always figures out the plans for the group on his own.Yet, in the book ‘Lord Of The Flies’, the group of boys on the island couldn’t achieve a proper united group in which everybody thought and worked on surviving and getting rescued. Hence, everything turned into chaos. Here are some reasons of why a more united and respectful group and, without a leader, could have saved them all, and would also be more likely to happen in real life.
Everyone has different qualities in different aspects, but nobody is perfect in all aspects.
There should be no leader in such a case of survival, so that the best qualities of everyone could be used and not only the leader’s ones. For instance, the original leader of the group, Ralph, would always forget about the purpose of keeping the fire alight, unlike Piggy, who could remember things better than Ralph, though the boys would only listen if Ralph spoke. I don’t mean that Piggy should have been the leader either, because he’s relatively weak, and couldn’t lead in more strength-requiring tasks, for example, hunting. The group would also, in reality, be more aware that they could stay there for the rest of their lives, if they did nothing, thus they would be likely to agree in using everyone’s different qualities to stay alive and get rescued. In conclusion, the qualities of each boy weren’t properly used as a result of just following the leader, that in reality shouldn’t have occurred.
The nature of violence and desire for power, notably like in Jack’s case, shouldn’t have
happened in a real life situation. After all, they must also have their family, friends and
dreams for their future? But in this story, that seems to get completely ignored, although
Piggy was the only one that at least mentioned his ‘auntie’ a couple times. In summary, in a critical situation like this, it would have been more likely that the boys didn’t care about power in the group, but more into acting together, with respect.
More unity and respect in the group would make better ideas about surviving and getting rescued. There’s an old saying: “Two heads are better than one”, meaning that if more people think about one problem, instead of just one, a good solution is more likely to be found, in a shorter matter of time. In this case, most noteworthy Piggy, that had some good ideas, could never tell them to the group directly, but via Ralph instead, since he was not respected by the group. This was due to both leaders, especially Jack, who would not only listen to Piggy’s ideas, but also be violent towards him. The leaders (Ralph and Jack) influence the others, so the others act in the way the leader likes. For example, if the leader laughs, the others laugh too, furthermore the way how everyone followed Jack’s idea to become savages. Though, this depended on how convincing the leader was, and apparently, Jack was better at this. Overall, the leader is the one who influences the boys the most. Due to Ralph not being convincing and Jack taking over, the group deunified. Consequently, the group didn’t get enough good ideas, and the majority ended up turning into savages.
Ultimately, we can see that a leader in this situation can cause more problems than solutions. The boys didn’t take profit from their qualities, the new leader (Jack) used violence to achieve his meaningless power, and there were few good ideas because of the deunification and lack of respect within the group. So, to keep a group’s strength, there should be union and respect, in which everyone can freely say their opinion, without a leader that tells what should be done, according to only himself.
See you in the next post! 😉
